Children's Privacy Notice

Larnnit is built for university-level students, but parts of the platform (study notes, tutor classes, marketplace) are useful to younger learners. This notice sets out how we handle accounts that belong to minors, in line with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the EU GDPR Article 8 (digital consent age), the UK Children's Code, Kenya's Data Protection Act (2019), and similar laws.

1. Minimum age

Under 13. Not permitted to use Larnnit. We don't knowingly create accounts for children under 13. If we discover one, we deactivate the account and delete the data.
13 to 15. Permitted in countries where the digital-consent age is 13 (e.g. United States, United Kingdom, Ireland in some contexts). In EEA countries that set a higher age (16 in many member states), the user's parent or guardian must consent.
16 to 17. Permitted, with reduced data collection and conservative defaults (see below).
18+. Standard adult experience.

2. Parental consent

When a user under the digital-consent age signs up, we request a verifiable parent/guardian email and ask them to confirm consent through a separate link sent to that address.
The parent or guardian can withdraw consent at any time by emailing privacy@larnnit.com. We will then deactivate the account and delete the data.
If we can't verify parental consent within 30 days of signup, the account is deactivated and the data deleted.

3. What we collect for minors

We collect the minimum needed to provide the service:

Email and (optional) display name.
School affiliation if the minor chooses to add one.
Content the minor uploads — posts, comments, tutor session messages.
Limited technical data (device type, app version, crash reports) for security and debugging.

We do not, for minor accounts:

Run behavioural advertising or third-party ad trackers.
Sell or share personal information with third parties for advertising.
Enable public profile by default (minors' profiles default to private).
Show direct-message invitations from accounts the minor doesn't follow.

4. Conservative defaults for minors

Private profile — only approved followers see posts.
Direct messages off by default from non-followers.
Location sharing off.
Public discoverability off in search and feed recommendations.
Marketplace selling requires the user to be at least 18.
Tutor profiles require the user to be at least 18.

5. Tutors working with minors

Tutors must use Larnnit's in-app tools for academic communication with minor students.
Tutors must not take minors off-platform for chat, calls, or payment.
Recording sessions with minors requires verifiable parental consent.

6. Schools and educational institutions

Where a school provides Larnnit accounts to its students, the school is responsible for obtaining any parental consent required by local law. We will sign a Data Processing Addendum (see DPA) on request, which constrains how we use student data to providing the service.

7. Parent & guardian rights

Parents and guardians of users we know to be minors may:

Ask what personal data we hold about their child.
Ask us to delete it.
Withdraw consent at any time.
Refuse further collection.

Email privacy@larnnit.com from the address on file. We respond within 30 days.

8. Reporting concerns

If you see content that exploits or endangers a child, report it in-app and to safety@larnnit.com. Confirmed child sexual abuse material is reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and to equivalent national hotlines.
